The Sneaky Thoughts That Affect Your Goals
My mentor taught me that the point of having goals is that I get to grow and evolve as a person.
At first, I rolled my eyes. Whatever.
Setting goals helps us evolve our thinking while uncovering and tackling obstacles.
If we haven't achieved our goal, there's a good chance it’s because our feelings are not where they need to be to accomplish the goal.
We are often told that there's no place for feelings and emotions in business. I wholly disagree. Feelings are the fuel to action, and they come from our thoughts.
However, there maybe there are sneaky thoughts that are subtle and stopping you from taking powerful action...
I really want this, but it's going to be hard (Thought: I want this. Feeling: Hard)
It's going to take a long time to get there (Thought: It's going to take a long time. Feeling: Frustration)
I want this, but I don't have much time left before I age out (Thought: I want this. Feeling: Fear)
We know our thoughts create our feelings, and our feelings drive our actions and results.
Here’s the thing…all of these examples are taken action from hard, frustration, and fear.
These are the subtle, sneaky thoughts and feelings that demotivate you while working on your goals. They knock you off course.
If you want to train for a marathon and if you think the training is going to suck, how motivated do you think you'll be to run?
Ok, this might be true, but is that thought helpful? :)
Challenge what you are thinking. You may miss the goal. And you get to decide if that's ok. Most times, when we set goals and miss, we still have plenty of strategic byproducts from going after them.
Set goals. Challenge the sneaky thoughts. Then take action. Evaluate your results.
As a wise man once wrote, "Shoot for the Moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."
