When You Can't Get A Straight Answer On Your Next Internal Opportunity
I've been there.
You’ve been promoted.
You got the raise.
You’ve served in your current role for a few performance reviews.
Everything is fine. But is it? Nothing is moving forward.
You’ve felt like you've stopped growing and are now watching your colleagues get new opportunities.
You speak to your boss. Leadership. Internal Sponsors and Mentors.
They all say the same thing. Be patient.
It’s the economy. It’s the job market. Sit tight. Things are uncertain.
You dream up ways you can contribute or lead. You share them. You are paid for the value you create.
While I don't know your specific circumstances, and there are nuances, I will bet that this is about executive presence.
If it were a competency issue, you would have heard about it, or you'd be gone.
When we have an executive presence block, we have a tremendous impact opportunity in front of us.
It’s time to nip it in the bud with my NIPS Framework.
N is for Narrative. You have to create your narrative.
I is in the Interest of time. You have to tell your story effectively and efficiently. You have to capture their interest. It's not about you. It's about them.
P is for Practice. Say it out loud. Walk it into your bones. Record and practice it.
S is for Straightforward. Be professional. Be kind and ask for feedback. Ask, what do you need to see from me in the next 90 days for me to move into this role?
Here’s the thing about executive presence.
Few have been trained on it. It’s everyone's responsibility.
Few have been taught how to ask, give, and receive feedback–unless you’ve hired an executive coach like me :)
Sure, we’ve all read the leadership books. But that is like reading a book on the mechanics of singing without ever actually using your voice aloud and singing.
So the next time you find yourself in a situation where you can't get a straight answer about your career. NIPS it in the bud, my friend.
Deploy my NIPS Framework.
Narrative. In the interest of time. Practice. Straightforward.
And watch how people start to respond to you differently.
Here's to possibility.
